Flexible Wings, FIA: “We can request changes from teams at any time”

by Stefano Zambroni

The FIA has clarified its position on the flexible wing issue, releasing a statement before the Singapore Grand Prix: “We maintain the authority to introduce new regulations during the season.”

The topic of potentially flexible wings in Formula 1 continues to be a hot topic of discussion. The debate arose after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where Oscar Piastri’s McLaren MCL38 appeared to have a “mobile” rear wing at high speeds. The issue has sparked conversations among fans and experts, dividing opinions between those who claim the papaya-colored car is “illegal” and those who praise the work of Andrea Stella and his team.

This is a discussion that, of course, hasn’t escaped the FIA’s attention. The Federation is responsible for drafting and enforcing the technical regulations, and so far, it appears that all ten Formula 1 teams have complied. No violations were found by the stewards, who have also installed cameras to monitor the movement of the front and rear parts of the cars.

Here is the Federation’s statement, emphasizing their ability to introduce regulations even mid-season: “The FIA is closely monitoring bodywork flexibility on all cars and reserves the right to request teams to make changes at any time during the season. However, if a team successfully passes all deflection tests and adheres to the regulations and technical directives, they are considered fully compliant, and no further action will be taken.”

“The FIA is currently reviewing the data and any additional evidence gathered from the Azerbaijan GP and is considering possible mitigation measures for future implementation. This is part of the standard process when examining technical legality, and the FIA retains the authority to introduce regulatory changes during the season if necessary.”
