by Stefano Zambroni

Pedro Acosta had a frightening crash in Austria, losing control of his KTM GasGas at 290km/h. Fortunately, the rider emerged physically unscathed.

It wasn’t the ideal start to the weekend for Pedro Acosta in Austria. The Spanish rider, who has been making waves in his rookie MotoGP season, suffered two crashes within minutes. While the first was a minor slip that ended in the gravel (watch the video of the first crash here), the second crash left spectators at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg holding their breath.

After his first crash in Turn 2, Acosta returned to the track for a time attack. However, just a few minutes later, the 2004-born rider lost control again, this time at over 290km/h, in a crash reminiscent of Marc Marquez’s infamous Honda crash at Mugello. Fortunately, Acosta escaped without any serious injuries and will continue his weekend despite the scare.

The cause of the crash may have been damage sustained in the first incident, along with a tire that was possibly not in perfect condition. Despite his bike having “tasted” the gravel in Spielberg, Acosta chose to continue, but when he hit the brakes, his KTM threw him off like a bullet.

The session was halted with a red flag for four minutes before resuming for the final laps. For the record, Jorge Martin clocked the fastest time, followed by Franco Morbidelli and Pol Espargaró.
