The results of FP1 MotoGP in Austria: Jorge Martin leads Free Practice 1, ahead of Morbidelli and Pol Espargaró. Acosta’s frightening crash!
After a week off following the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, MotoGP is back on track at Spielberg (check out the weekend’s weather and schedule): Jorge Martin tops the timesheets with a lap of 1.29.654, still some distance from Marco Bezzecchi’s track record of 1.28.533 set last year. Martin’s teammate, Franco Morbidelli, continues his strong form, taking second place as he seems to be finding confidence with the GP24.
Third place goes to a surprising Pol Espargaró, racing as a wildcard, followed by Pecco Bagnaia in fourth. The Italian rider started his weekend calmly, three-tenths behind his championship rival. Meanwhile, Marc Marquez ended up in 18th place: the Spaniard had briefly moved up to eighth, but track limits nullified his lap, leaving him at the lower end of the timesheets.
During the session, Pedro Acosta suffered a scary crash: the Spanish rider lost control at the braking zone at 300 km/h, narrowly avoiding serious injury. He escaped with likely abrasions and a big scare but managed to continue and finish the session in fifth place (here’s the VIDEO of the crash).
Next up is the pre-qualifying session at 2:00 PM, where the first provisional results of the MotoGP weekend will start to take shape.
