Piastri, the incredible revelation after his first F1 victory: the Australian driver raced with a broken rib!
No, it’s not a mistake: Oscar Piastri’s first victory came with a broken rib. The Australian driver himself admitted the fracture on his social media channels: “The first part of the season is over: first Formula 1 win, first broken rib. The rib is enjoying the summer break…”, he wrote in his latest post.
And that’s exactly how it is: with the X-ray photo attached, dated July 8, 2024, it’s clear that Oscar Piastri raced and won the Hungarian Grand Prix with a fracture that was still healing, considering that the Hungaroring weekend began only 11 days after his injury.
A Grand Prix that ended with a McLaren one-two, the first since that extraordinary and unexpected win at Monza 2021 with Daniel Ricciardo’s victory and Lando Norris’ second place. It just so happens that in Hungary, the first place was also taken by an Australian driver, with the Briton in second, but unlike Monza, it was the 2001-born Piastri who took home the 25 points in Budapest.
Piastri, a victory like… in MotoGP?
A win certainly not typical for a Formula 1 driver. In fact, it’s more reminiscent of a typical “MotoGP victory”: it’s not uncommon in the premier class of two-wheel motorsport for a rider to win despite an injury or fracture.
It’s more unusual in modern F1, where injuries (fortunately) are rare. However, the circumstances of Piastri’s injury remain unclear for now.
