Charles Leclerc triumphs in the virtual Monaco GP ahead of Alexander Albon: curse over for the home driver or just a gaming coincidence?

Curse broken at Monte Carlo? We can’t say for certain, but following Max Verstappen’s success at the Nürburgring 24h, Charles Leclerc emerges as the victor in the virtual realm, winning the Monaco GP on F1 24 (the official Formula 1 video game) ahead of Alex Albon. A triumph for Charles Leclerc, dominated from start to finish, with a 7-second lead over his friend Albon in 20 laps.

Formula 1 drivers Charles Leclerc and Alex Albon took on world football superstars Diogo Jota and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, along with content creators WillNE, Chesnoid, Liam Kalevi, AverageF1Consumer, MaximeMXM, and ElReyGuiri, in a special SimRacing event ahead of the Monaco GP 2024. The “The Ten Racers” competition saw sports stars and more battling it out in a virtual race around the iconic Monaco street circuit in the new video game F1 24, set to be launched on May 31st.

“Flop” though, for the two footballers in the race: out of 10 participants, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finishes in 8th place, while Liverpool’s winger Diogo Jota is in 9th, almost 1 minute behind Leclerc.

What is SimRacing?

Beyond the monitor, a world of emotions. SimRacing is not just a simple video game, it’s a total immersion in the world of motorsport, where passion for racing merges with the most advanced technology. Behind a realistic steering wheel and pedals (often you can start with a few hundred euros!), virtual drivers challenge themselves and their opponents on digitally reproduced circuits with meticulous precision, reliving the thrill of speed and the tactics of the race.

Today’s driving simulators faithfully recreate driving physics, car behavior, and the sensations at the wheel with meticulous accuracy. Every imperfection, every deviation from the ideal trajectory, comes with a cost, making it extremely challenging to compete at high levels. Concentration is paramount, reflexes must be sharp and responsive, and mastery of the vehicle is essential to tame virtual machines approaching speeds of 300 km/h.
